Trying to Manage UC Symptoms

Changing your routine because of UC symptoms?
We’ve Been There

On Screen:

Amie
Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Patient

Amie:
Because of the fact that I never knew when a flare could hit, I always needed to have restroom facilities readily available.

On Screen:

Maria
Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis Patient

Maria:
I could go to work, I could sit there but I wasn’t going to be able to stay there the whole time. Like I could before. Or go to school. You know? My mind was elsewhere. I went out, I had to think about where is the bathroom?

On Screen:

Jim
Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis Patient

Interviewer (from off screen):
How were your symptoms affecting you each day?

Jim:
I was still having the need to go to the bathroom at least five times a day. With a classroom full of students, there were a lot of times during the day, where I just had to go to the bathroom and I had to go now.

On Screen:

Bill
Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis Patient

Bill:
I know every bathroom within a one-mile, two-mile radius of where I work.

Amie:
I would always have to bring a change of clothes with me.

Interviewer (from off screen):
What about personal plans? Did your UC symptoms ever affect them?

Jim:
When I went on a cruise with my wife and some other friends, I made it a mission to know where every single bathroom was.

On Screen:

Sarah
Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis Patient

Sarah:
…because of my UC symptoms, I wasn’t able to socialize with my friends like I wanted to. Unfortunately I was missing out on a lot of plans, and that hurt with making new friends as well.

Bill:
It starts affecting your social life. You can do workarounds, but I have to say, it wears you down. It ends up dominating your life.
