Jim
Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Patientt
Jim:
I really didn’t know enough about ulcerative colitis and going to a specialist and a nurse. I felt it was really important for them to be able to know exactly what I was going through.

Sarah:
It’s not something anybody really wants to talk about, going to your doctor and talking about poop. And so it was one of those things where I kind of tried to be delicate about it at first, and that really wasn’t getting the point across. And so, you just have to rip the Band-Aid off and just be like, “Here is what’s happening.”

Amie

Amie:
I have always gone to doctor’s appointments prepared with questions. The more open that you are with what you’re going through and your symptoms, the more your doctor can help you.
Interviewer (from off screen):
How did you prepare for your appointments?
Sarah:
I took the initiative to come to my doctor’s appointments with food diaries in regards to what I was eating on a daily basis, and how many times I was having to go to the bathroom, and what my pain level was each day.
Jim:
I basically had a journal to discuss with him.
Amie:
I’ve done lots of research myself on ulcerative colitis because I want to have my symptoms be under control.

And the only way to do that is to have an open dialogue with your doctor. But on top of that, you gotta pay attention to yourself. You know yourself better than anybody else.
