Niki
Moderate to Severe Crohn’s Disease Patient

Niki:
I was scared and embarrassed, and because of those feelings, I downplayed the severity of my symptoms. So instead of painting an accurate picture for my doctor at the time, I said things like, yeah, I’m having some diarrhea.

Interviewer (from off screen):
What advice would you give a Crohn’s patient who may be struggling to open up to their doctor?

Jill:
You have to feel comfortable talking about what’s happening with you in order for the doctor to help you. They’ve heard these conversations before. This is nothing new. But you have to inform your teammate about what’s happening, and your doctor is your teammate.

Kip:
It has to be a team effort, it has to be. Your doctor has your best interest, but he has other patients. So you have to take the initiative.

Advice I would give to people who are maybe having trouble with their doctors or not finding the right doctors, I mean, I’ve been there. If you’re not comfortable with your doctor, or don’t like the results you’re getting with your doctor, then go see another one. There’s always another avenue to, you know, get to where you want to go. Just make sure you’re being proactive on how to get there.

Jill:
Come prepared to all of your doctor’s appointments ready to talk about your symptoms.

Melissa:
As a patient, it’s extremely important to go into your appointment with a list of questions because, 9 times out of 10, you’re going to forget 1 or 2 things that you wanted answers for.
