Ulcerative colitis (UC) has been linked to an overproduction of certain proteins, including one called tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which is produced naturally by your body’s immune system.
For people with UC, overproduction of TNF is associated with inflammation in the large intestine, which can lead to the symptoms of UC.

Prescription medications, including HUMIRA, have possible risks involved with treatment, so it’s important to discuss them with your doctor. If you're still experiencing symptoms of moderate to severe ulcerative colitis despite your current treatment, ask your doctor if HUMIRA is right for you.

Because HUMIRA blocks the action of TNF, it can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. You should not start taking HUMIRA if you have any kind of infection unless your doctor says it’s OK. People treated with HUMIRA have an increased chance of developing serious infections that may lead to hospitalization or death, and may increase the chance of getting lymphoma (including a rare kind), skin or other cancers.
