Meet Joe

Joe:

I’m Joe, and I’m a journeyman toolmaker and a part-time flight instructor. I love to fly. I love my family. I have psoriatic arthritis.

On Screen:

What were the symptoms you first noticed?

Joe:

I woke up one day and I go, Wow, my right-hand ring finger, well it doesn’t look normal. It’s bent outta shape. The pain just overtook my life. I was giving up things to do. Motorcycling, skiing, walks, bicycling.

On Screen:

What do you remember about your plaque psoriasis?

Joe:

My plaque psoriasis, I didn’t even know what that was. My oldest granddaughter, she goes, “Grandpa, why you got breadcrumbs in your hair?” And it’s from scratching the lesions cuz I was constantly itching.

On Screen:

Did psoriatic arthritis stop you from doing things?

Joe:

As a pilot, I was always worried about not passing my flight physical to perform my duties as a commercial pilot. (Tires look in very good shape.) The biggest part was getting in the aircraft. It was horrible. And if I can’t crawl in the airplane, I ain’t goin’ anywhere.

Was it hard getting diagnosed?

Joe:

The primary care doctor, he still didn’t have an idea what it was. He thought it was eczema. I did go see a rheumatologist, and the rheumatologist pieced it all together. He was the one that diagnosed it as psoriatic arthritis. Until they explained it, I’m like, what did I do wrong?

Was it hard giving yourself an injection?

Joe:

It was easier for me to give myself injections. I said, yeah I’m ready to do this, you know? And it was great. Using HUMIRA, within the first two weeks, I felt changes. The pain wasn’t as intense. The swelling had gone down in my hands. And plus, a little added bonus, the plaque psoriasis started disappearing.

What can you do again with HUMIRA?

Joe:

I’ve been able to get back into motorcycling. I’ve been able to work out. I’ve been able to get back to flying. HUMIRA has helped me get back to being Joe again. It makes me, me.

HUMIRA can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for TB. Tell your doctor if you have been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you’ve had TB, hepatitis B, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. Don’t start HUMIRA if you have an infection.
