HUMIRA is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis who are ready for systemic therapy or phototherapy, and are under the care of a doctor who will decide if other systemic therapies are less appropriate.
Early on, even as a child and into junior high, I always thought that it was just the dry winters of Michigan.
I would, you know, run out to the drug store and get some lotion. Put Vaseline™ on my hands and wear gloves to bed. I wasn’t certain what it was. I wasn’t certain how to explain it to my friends, either.
My mom was a nurse, so she’s the one who directed me to a local dermatologist in Battle Creek, Michigan.
The doctor said you have moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis.
I thought, “Oh really? It really puts a more definitive label on what I have.”
I think “chronic” identified with the way I’d been feeling. That there really was not much hope or much solution. I mean it went a lot deeper than the condition of my skin. It dictated what I had to wear to work. What I had to wear out on a date.
I met this really nice-looking guy and it started to become an intimate moment…I remember he started to caress my back. And then he felt it. And I felt like almost a gasp or a sense of disgust from this person.
As I grew older I became more concerned that I, you know, I really deserve better than this. I started getting books from the library and studying anatomy and really going to town on the details. And then I started reading the message boards. There was a forum and a community and there were so many people that are battling psoriasis. That was a shocker to me.
I thought I had tried everything until I found that there was something called a biologic. It made sense that psoriasis was really the result of an immune disorder that’s gone awry. The disruption in my immune system was causing plaques on the outside.
As I began to administer HUMIRA, I could see the redness start to just diminish. “My gosh, this stuff is working.”
In clinical trials, most adults who used HUMIRA for moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis saw 75% skin clearance and the majority of people were clear or almost clear in just 4 months. Your results may vary.
HUMIRA can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for TB. Tell your doctor if you’ve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you’ve had TB, hepatitis B, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. Don’t start HUMIRA if you have an infection.
It gave me a bit of hope. Just a little bit. Because I learned not to dream big when it came to trying to solve this issue.
I know that there is certainly trepidation about injecting. There are options with the syringe or the Pen. When I inject twice a month, it becomes second nature.
It’s so important to learn all you can and know about your options.
Don’t be afraid to investigate.
There’s not only hope for me but there’s hope for so many people that are just willing and bold enough to take those big steps. That’s something I would really like to tell people that are struggling with it is, you can live your life and not have to let plaque psoriasis run the show at all.
