HUMIRA is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis who are ready for systemic therapy or phototherapy, and are under the care of a doctor who will decide if other systemic therapies are less appropriate.
My name’s Kathi and I’m from Santa Rosa, California. I grew up in a very small town. When I graduated, I joined the service so I was in the Marines for 6 years. I joined the Marines because I thought it would be a great way to see the world and have an adventure. I consider myself a very active person.
I first suspected something was wrong with my skin when I was a young child. Always had very dry skin and patches. Never really knew what it was. It was a really hard time—to be different. Well, let’s just say kids are mean.
When I was actually diagnosed with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis, I felt discouraged, I just retreated and stayed inside my own shell.
My symptoms at that time were very flaky plaques behind my ears, all over my torso, and my legs, and my arms. So I never wore shorts, never wore dark colors. So I’ve had probably 8 or 10 different dermatologists in my life. I did feel like I wasn’t getting the results I wanted with each dermatologist.
I learned about HUMIRA. My brother-in-law saw a commercial and suggested that I talk to my dermatologist about it.
In clinical trials, most adults who used HUMIRA for moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis saw 75% skin clearance and the majority of people were clear or almost clear in just 4 months. Your results may vary.
HUMIRA can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for TB. Tell your doctor if you’ve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you’ve had TB, hepatitis B, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. Don’t start HUMIRA if you have an infection.
I was a little apprehensive to inject myself the first time. I realized that it was going to help. The moment I noticed HUMIRA was working was when I bought a black shirt. And then, I actually wore it. I cut my hair super short and wasn’t hiding anymore behind my hair. I wear makeup every day—not to hide, but to enhance. It just was very liberating. So when I tell people that I classify myself as an introvert, no one ever believes me. I run 3 days a week, I cycle. If there is a philosophy or a motto that I live by, just live. Just live and make sure you laugh at yourself at least once every day.
