About HUMIRA
HUMIRA Is a Medicine Called a TNF Blocker
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that has been linked to a protein produced in the body called TNF (tumor necrosis factor) that can cause inflammation. People with RA have too much TNF in the affected areas of the body.
HUMIRA works by binding TNF and helps block the process that can lead to the pain, inflammation, and progression of joint damage that RA can cause. Because TNF blockers, including HUMIRA, affect the immune system, they can lower the ability to fight infections and may cause other serious side effects.

HUMIRA and Methotrexate: A Proven Combination
Many doctors prescribe HUMIRA to patients with moderate to severe RA who are already taking methotrexate. In clinical trials, patients taking HUMIRA and methotrexate saw better results than those taking methotrexate alone. In a study of patients with early, moderate to severe RA (diagnosed for less than 3 years, not previously treated with methotrexate), combining HUMIRA and methotrexate showed:
- Almost 2 out of 3 people had no further joint damage at 1 year (compared to 37% taking methotrexate alone).
- It was an average of 5 times more effective at slowing the progression of joint damage than methotrexate at 2 years.
Medications used to treat RA can have serious side effects. Make sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you're taking.
